Yeon - Maritime Safety and PollutionWhat is the problem?
  • Provide a summary of the issue here.
  • The main problems would be that living things are effected from pollution on the sea, like fish, dolphins, whales etc. This is mainly caused by the littering of people, like water bottles, or chip packets, or anything like that. Some people don't necesarily mean to litter the ocean, because they don't know that sometimes when they throw garbage down on the ground that may go down a sewege drain, which would go into the ocean. But some people do actually intentionally leave garbage on the beach, which causes some pollution to come from factories, and seweges. Over fishing is another section that is related to this problem.
  • (How does that affect us? Consider the effect of water pollution on humans)
  • water pollution effects us, because if it is too polluted we can't get water from the sea, which means we can't shower or drink fresh water. If we drink the polluted water, we may get diseases, get sick, and this may even result to death (if you look at it in the worst possible 'senario'). Another reason why we shouldn't pollute the seas is because if we litter the sea we can't swim in it, many marine animals may die.

  • If water is polluted then people have to go through a long process to clean the water. If water isn't clean enough, drinking it will make you sick. Also, animals are being harmed like fish and sea creatures. Think of everything that needs or contains water. All of those could be affected when the seas and other sources of water are polluted. Animals that live in the water wouldn't be able to live very long. Oil spills can harm seagulls by sticking to their wings, there for the seagulls can't fly. (How can this problem caused though? Maybe you could mention something about the fact that this is mainly man-made causes because of people who litter, or maybe some natural disasters can cause it to pollute?) Water pollution is mainly the fault of humas, by littering and dumping things into rivers, lakes and seas etc.

Who is affected?

  • Explain how the issue affects you, your city, your country, the world?

Lara - Who is affected?
  • Detail people who will be most affected by this issue and explain in what way
  • I think that people and animals will be affected in most ways. Fish in the sea I think are the most affected because when they start to chew on plastic bags that are in the sea/ocean it gets into their system and reacts, this could make them dye which will make all the other animals die if all the fish go extinct (which probably isn't possiable).
  • (People and the marine life). Also affects the whole marine cycle because if one type of organism starts to get affected then this will affect all other organisms linked to them- i.e. the food cycle).
  • Explain how the issue affects you, your city, your country, the world?
  • If you litter the sea the animals, people and plants will all be affected. If you litter the seas and it gets stuck to the seaweed or some plant that fish eat then they will get litter stuck in their stomachs. A lot of animals will be affected because the fish in the water would die because the seaweed might have some pollution stuck on it or they might start to eat the plastic bags. (Food chain) If an animal or plant dies that is at the bottom of a food chain then all the animals will be affected, which will affect the people in the world.

  • Consider the future and the implication if this issue is not addressed
  • (Water pollution can have a lot of negative effects on many things in our world).
  • There are a lot of things in the world that need water, fish, dolphins, whales etc. Need it to live in. Humans and other animals need it to survive. There are also a lot of manmade products that need water. So in the future, we could end up without most of those products. Some medicines need it too.

  • We could raise awareness to those that don't understand that littering lakes, seas, beaches etc. will affect everyone especially animals that rely on water as a home. Humans rely on it as a important resource, so raising awareness could enlighten minds. People that litter could be fined as a consequence, and a group of people could help clean up the mess nearby water, as a community project.
